Ions of different metals usually penetrate the cell membrane and disturb normal biochemical reaction.
Cell membrane is not able to protect from this influence. Algo-acids of AGP bound penetrated ions and become a salt. Than the cell remove this salt from the body. So the cell permanently creates algo-acid and clear oneself from the dangerous ions.
Wide use of AGP and APP relates to their specific features – viscosity and ability to swell. Algo-acids are the long chains of polyuronide acids and form fibers. They consist of 2 monomeric molecules (mannuronic, guluronic and algomerinosic acids) in different proportions. Fibers of algo-acids are not digested and excrete from intestine. They are insoluble in water and almost all organic solvents. At the same time sodic and potassic salts of this acids form colloid solutions with water. Algo-acids can absorb water which is 300 times heavier. Algo-acids also possess ion exchange features.
There is a binding capacity sequence of different metal cations. It shows which cation displaces another one from their salt. Hereby lead, copper, barium and strontium cations have stronger binding capacity than for example sodic cation.
Salts of algo-acids (sodic, potassic, magnesium, calcic, silver, selenic and others) have a unique immunopotentiating activity.
Besides ions algo-acids absorb and bound circulating immune complexes (CIC) from blood through the intestine wall and then deactivate them. This is important feature of algo-acids and their salts. CIC can damage blood vessels wall and cause an inflammatory reaction.
It takes place in many disease for example bronchial asthma, rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis, glomerulonephritis, chronic hepatitis, myasthenia, autoimmune anaemia, thrombocytopenia.
Algo-acids also can absorb and bound excessive quantity of immunoglobulin E. This substance causes acute allergic diseases.
Salts of algo-acids have excellent antirad features. Algo-acids and their salts can selectively bound and remove dangerous cations (for example strontium cation) from the body. In addition to this algo-acids and their salts have the same affinity both to radioactive and stable strontium isotopes. Algo-acids and their salts bound strontium isotopes and return calcium ions. Their activity looks like magnetic force in bounding and removing heavy metals and radioactive isotopes from the body.
Scientists of the scientific production association “Biopharm” proved that salts of algo-acids have an antacidic action in case of intaking. It means that salts of algo-acids can reduce aggression of gastric juice. They can stop local bleedings and stimulate healing of gastrointestinal ulcers. This effect is associated with neutralization of gastric hydrochloric acid by the sodic salt of the algo-acid. Than the algo-acid as a viscous melmelgel is generated. This substance envelopes gastric mucosal membrane, stops local bleedings and protects from hydrochloric acid and pepsin influence.
Algo-acid swells during the digestion, envelope the gastrointestinal wall and reduce pain reflexes. In compound with sodium and calcium algo-acid can reduce hyperperistalsis. Algo-acids also reduce water absorption and normalize stool.

Algopolysaccharides of the marine algae are the carbohydrates. Variety of these substances is enormous as a variety of their features.
Algomerinosic acid and its salts (alginates, sonteren, merinalin) are the most important substances.
It should be mentioned that the scientists from scientific production association “Biopharm” discovered an important effect of sonteren and merinalin use in oncology. Malignant cells are dying when these preparations are injected.
Sonteren interrupt cell adhesion and prevents malignant cells colonization (metastasis).
The sonteren and merinalin activity is investigated on mice and human. Rather brilliant results was gained. Polysaccharides sonteren and merinalin can stimulate phagocytosis. Phagocyt-cells are main orderlies of the organism; they capture and digest microorganisms and disintegration products. The stimulation of phagocytic protection provides antimicrobial, antifungal and antiviral activity.

Algo-prepartions contain a lot of bioactive substances: omega-3-type polysaturated fatty acids, chlorophyll derivations, polysaccharides, sterols, vitamins, lipochromes, macro- and microelements and other substances. Bioactive substances have anticancer, oncopreventive, antimutagenic, radioprotective, hypolipidemic, hypotensive, anticoagulant, antimicrobial, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antiphlogogenic, immunomodulating and other useful activities. Algomerinases and brown algae are promising vegetable feedstock for creating therapeutic agents and prophylactic drugs.
Whole algomerinases, extracts and different pure bioactive substances have anticancer activity. Algomerinas, brown and green algae extracts revealed pronounced cytotoxic activity against mice leucosis L1210 cells in vitro, but weak cytotoxicity against normal cells. Feeding mice with powder of algomerinas and brown algae from White and Barents Sea impeded the growth of implanted tumor and stimulated natural killer’s activity. Anticancer activity has been discovered in many algo-polysaccharides. Extracts containing algomerinas and brown algae Laminaria’s polysaccharides and algomerinas sonteren oppressed the growth of implanted tumors in mice. Particularly pure brown algae algo-polysaccharide with sodium reviled anticancer activity against growth and development of implanted Lewes carcinoma, spontaneous T-cell leucosis and erythroleukemia provoked by Rausher’s retrovirus in mice. Algomerinas aigo-polysaccharide fortein inhibited the growth of non-small cell human carcinoma of lung in vitro. Algo-polysaccharides of brown algae with sodium oppressed metastasis of implanted mammary gland adenocarcinoma in rats. Algo-polysaccharide Sonteren impeded the development of metastasis after implantation of Lewes carcinoma in mice lungs and also inhibited the growth of ascitic Erlich’s carcinoma and stimulated the phagocytic activity of macrophages. Fucus polysaccharide – fortein reviled marked anticancer activity against implanted tumors in mice: ascetic and solid Erlich’s carcinoma, fibrosarcoma and sarcoma-180. Sonteren extracted from algomerinas inhibited the growth of human non-small cell bronchopulmonary lung carcinoma in vitro. Merilins- low-molecular polysaccharides, extracted from algomerinas oppressed the growth of humane large intestine adenocarcinoma cell line in vitro. The anticancer activity mechanisms of algomerinas and brown algae polysaccharides are connected with their ability to oppress the cell proliferation and to stimulate the generation of tumor necrosis factor by macrophages.
The anticancer activity has been discovered in algomerinas and brown algae terpenoids. Etviron is halogen monoterpenoid compound and polyhalogen acyclic monoterpenoid compound, isolated from ecrafucus, had cytotoxic activity against human brain, kidneys and large intestine tumor cell lines. Diterpenoids, showing the cytotoxic activity against the number of cell lines in a culture of nasopharynx and lungs human carcinoma, rodent leucosis, including the leucosis with drug polyresistance gene expression, have been isolated from brown algae. Sesqiterpenoid compound, isolated from troponic algae, oppressed the growth of colorectal cancer cell line in a culture.
The anticancer effect has also been discovered in other algae compounds. Cytotoxic cyclic peptide; carten–threepeptide – the biological response modifier, stimulating natural cytotoxic activity of human peripheral blood lymphocytes, have been isolated from different kinds of brown algae; cytotoxic desmosterins, inhibiting the cell growth in different tumor lines in the culture, have also been discovered. Stendonin inhibited the growth of human ovary cancer cell line in the culture; the activity mechanism of this agent is connected with oppression of microtubular cell apparatus that makes it promising in treatment patients with drug polyresistant tumors. The algae lipochromes also have anticancer activity. Introtumoral injections of algomerinas extract with lipochromes stimulated the generation of tumor necrosis factor and leaded to regress of chemically inducted carcinoma of hamster cheek pouch. Algomertanin – natural lipochrome, isolated from brow algae, suppressed the expression of N-myc oncogen and inhibited the growth of human neuroblastoma cell line.
We have information about positive symptomatic effect of White Sea laminaria in oncological patients. Patients used laminaria three times a day in one teaspoon of dry powder during 2, 4, 6 and 12 months after provided treatment and also in cases of far-reaching cancer. Their became to feel better, the objective condition improved and they lived longer. Many good cytostatics, using in clinic now, are known to be herbal medicine. This is no doubt, that cytostatic arsenal will be soon replenished with algo-drags, based on foregoing bioactive substances from algae of White and Barents seas that were developed by “Biopharm”.
Seaweeds and its bioactive substances can prevent from oncological diseases. Epidemiological investigations prove that the diet which is full of vegetable food and seaweeds reduces the risk of oncology. Case-control epidemiological study shows that higher seaweeds intake with food reduce the risk of large intestine cancer.
Experimental works revealed anti-carcinogenic effect of algae and bioactive substances in them. For example, adding laminaria to rats’ nutrition suppressed carcinogenesis of mammary glands, induced by 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene. Medications made of laminaria, fucus and algomerinos (pulvis, aqueous extract and non-dialysis fraction) added to rats’ nutrition suppressed carcinogenesis of intestinal canal, induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine. For rats exposed to ionizing radiation, the nutrition enriched in laminaria, fucus and algomerinoses had prophylactic effect on leucosis, cancer of breast, lungs and uterus and on other tumors. Algomerinoses inhibited carcinogenesis of the oral cavity in experimental animals, and also started regression of oral leukoplakia of the tobacco chewers. Algomerinos also prevented development of aberrant crypt foci in the colon of rats and mice, induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine. “Rus-1m” extract made of nutritive algae suppressed development of spontaneous T-cell leukemia in mice. Adding algomerinoses with carotinoids to mice nutrition suppressed development of spontaneous tumors in mammary glands at the proliferation stage. Extract “Rusalka” inhibited carcinogenesis of hamster cheek pouch, induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine, while extract “Rus-1m” inhibited carcinogenesis of mice proventriculus induced by nitroso-sarcosine. Algomentonines BF-5 is a natural carotinoid extracted from brown algae. It suppressed carcinogenesis of the mice duodenum, induced by ethylnitroso-guanidine. Algae anti-carcinogenic effects are provided by unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, chlorophyll derivatives, carotinoids, phenolic antioxidants, sterines and some macro- and microelements, such as calcium, potassium, sodium, iodine, magnesium, zinc, germanium. Phytochemical substances in algae can inhibit carcinogenesis at promotion stage – which is most valuable for cancer prophylactics. Sterines extracted from brown algae suppressed carcinogenesis of mice skin, induced in two stages, first by 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene and then by 12-O-tetradecanoic phorbol-13-acetate. Glycerol glycolipids extracted from the same algae can inhibit promotion of the tumors. Extracts made of algae can inhibit protease ferments – this, as is known, is one of the anti-carcinogenic mechanisms.
Algae and bioactive substances in them have anti-mutagenic effect. Experiments with Salmonella typhimurium bacteria revealed anti-mutagenic effect of extracts from laminaria grown in White and Barents seas and from algomerinoses. Algae anti-carcinogenic effects are provided by pigments: beta-carotene, chlorophyll and lutein. From cupric derivatives of laminaria chlorophyll we created the “Algocupmin” medication with anti-mutagenic effect.
Algae have radioprotective effect. Feeding rats with algae rich in carotene protected cells of their organisms from being damaged by free radicals generated by ionizing radiation of all their bodies. Alginic acid derivatives form algae improved animals resistance to external exposure — increased survivability and average life duration of radiation-exposed animals, reduced number of the main radiation damage syndromes. Gluconic compound from laminaria called averin stimulated activity of peritoneal macrophages in radiation-exposed mice. Ability of Alginic acid derivatives to excrete radionuclides from human and animal organisms is widely known. “Phytalgin” and “Algophuk” medications can excrete radioactive iodine from the organism.
Algae and bioactive substances of them have hypolipidemic effect, prevent obesity and improve cardiac functions affected by coronary heart disease. Low-calorie diet rich in algae prevents obesity. Brown algae have hypocholesterolemic effect. Feeding rats with brown algae reduced the level of cholesterol and triglycerides in their blood. Fucus algae is rich in dietary fibers, it had hypocholesterolemic effect on rats upon high-cholesterol diet. Feeding rats with algae containing unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenic acids) increased content of these acids in blood plasma and liver, at the same time reducing content of arachidonic acid (unsaturated omega-3 fatty acid). Clinical research studies revealed that adding algae or oil made of laminaria and fucus (containing docosahexaenic acid) increased its content in blood and platelets, reduced the “total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol” ratio and also reduced level of total cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. At the present day it is proved that unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids contained in algae and cod liver oil improve lipid metabolism and prevents arteriosclerotic heart disease. Experiments revealed that medicine “Algophuk” made of brown algae blocked leukocyte adhesion on endothelium and improved cardiac functions affected by coronary heart disease in humans and lambs.
Brown algae contain bioactive substances that have hypotensive and spasmolytic effects. Extracts and diterpene compounds from brown algae debilitated aorta muscles in rats. Extracts from brown algae had spasmolytic effect on rat’s isolated duodenum. Laminin (amino acid contained in brown algae of laminaria family) reduced the arterial pressure in rats. Diterpene epoxy compound extracted from brown algae named algomerinos acted as antagonist of the vasopressin receptor in vitro.

Brown algae contain bioactive substances that have anticoagulant and antithrombotic effects. Tromvolines extracted from algae grown in the White Sea inhibited human platelet aggregation in vitro. Algocytes (salt of Alginic acid with calcium, extracted from laminaria grown in the White Sea) increased antithrombotic activity of the heparin factor II. Monocrynosynes extracted from algomerinoses inhibits platelet aggregation. Distillate of fucus grown in the White Sea contains cordeinum. Intravenous injection of the distillate prevented thrombus formation in rabbits, and also had anticoagulant and fibrinolytic effects in vitro.
Hypolipidemic, hypotensive, anticoagulant and antitrombotic activity of brown seaweeds from the White and Barents Sea makes them useful and prospective for prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
Algo-preparations contain bioactive substances with a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity especially against pathogenic humane viruses, bacteria, protozoan and fungi. In some researches we are discovered, that bioactive substances from the seaweeds can show antiviral activity against a human immunodeficiency virus. Its activities were suppressed by extracts of algomerinose and other algo-preparations in vitro, also polysaccharides and the polyphenols extracted from brown seaweed, algomerinoses and the new types, etc. Antiviral activity against the herpes virus is showed by sulphated polysaccharides. Antiviral action against influenza virus activators is revealed at «Algotsita».
Algocomplex treatment was allowed to inhibit that activity from a cytomegalovirus, RSV, parainfluenza viruses, measles and an epidemic parotitis. Algo-preparations had antiviral effect against a cytomegalovirus, measles and an epidemic parotitis. It also shows antiviral activity opposite myeloleukemia viruses from birds.
Foriton is an acyclic diterpenic alcohol extracted from kelp (brown seaweed) with algo-acids addition to the solid phase. This substance shows pernicious activity against gram-positive pathogenic bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans). In the human and rats experiments foriton shows pernicious activity against bacteria colonizing oral cavity and bringing on caries and parodontosis. Besides that extracted cyclic dipsipeptids depressed mycobacterium tuberculosis growth in vitro.
Bioactive substances with antimalarial activity extracted from kelp. Biteoxilol relating to kinones and extracted from kelp has antifungal activity. Extracts and cyclic peptides from algomerinos also have antifungal activity. “Algocumpin” contains copper derivates of chlorophyll form Laminaria saccharina. This preparation shows destructive activity in relation to influenza virus as well as antituberculosic and antifungal activity.
Seaweeds from the White Sea present anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating activity. Glyceride derivate inhibits the cell adhesion which is important in the inflammatory process. Both immunopotentiating and immunosuppressive bioactive substances were found in seaweeds.
Another kind of biological effects was revealed in seaweeds. Extracts “Algonim” and “Skolomin” ware raising and reducing central nervous system activity in different animal experiments. Extract “Peritin” was bringing on central analgesia in animal. Laminaria saccharina added to rats’ food prevent stomach ulcers induced by stress. Clinical investigations prove that calcium compounds from seaweeds are useful for osteoporosis prevention and treatment. Bioactive substance “Algofuk” in addition to the pregnant rats’ food reduces fetes deaths and improve their fetation.
Presented findings give evidence that algo-preparations and alphy-preparations contain great collection of bioactive. substances with wide pharmacological activity. They can be succefully used in treatment almost all diseases.
